What do you do as my midwife?
The hallmark of the CPM is informed choice. I will discuss with you the risks and benefits of any procedure or test and YOU will make the final decision to get the test or procedure. A CPM who practices informed choice will never tell you to show up at this place at this time to get your (fill in the blank) done because it is standard protocol. You will always have the right to refuse!
With a CPM, you call the shots. When you are ready for me to come to you offering nurturing and loving guidance, I will be there. Birth can be a very empowering experience for women and giving your power away can feel very disheartening. It is your time to bask in your glorious womanhood that has been passed down through the generations from mothers to daughters. Birth is innate and there is nothing to fear about giving birth. I can help you realize this by allowing you to have all of the power.
The journey begins...
What an exciting time! You are about to bring a new life into the world. I am your guide through this process.
At the beginning of your pregnancy, our visits will include one-on-one discussions of what is going on in your pregnancy and with the baby as well as what things you need to be doing to prepare for the birth of your baby. I will do a physical assessment of you and your baby at each appointment and will help you to stay on track for a healthy pregnancy and birth. If you decide to hire a doula as additional labor support, I can recommend some great doulas to you before your birth. All visits will be in your home. I encourage your partner and other family members to be present if you wish. If you want your younger children present during the birth, you will need to find a trusted adult to watch over them and help them understand what is going on to keep them calm.
Welcome to the world...
During your birth, I will continually assess how you and your baby are handling the labor. I offer homeopathic and herbal remedies if I feel they are indicated. I do very few vaginal exams and you will usually have to ask for one. We will have worked on Optimal Fetal Positioning and Spinning Babies techniques before you go into labor so that your baby will be in a good position to be born. You or your partner can “catch” the baby if you desire. I do not usually cut the cord until the placenta is out.
At the moment of birth, I assess the baby for appropriate transitioning to life outside of the womb. I also assess you for abnormal bleeding and appropriate transitioning to becoming a new mother. I will not leave your side until I know you and your baby are stable. I will make sure you have a light, healthy meal, and then my assistant and I will start to clean up and make sure you’ll have what you need in the immediate postpartum period nearby.
The support continues...
After the birth, I will come to your home for 4-6 postpartum visits to assess you and your baby’s health. I am always a phone call away if you have questions or concerns about breastfeeding, newborn care, or what you may be experiencing emotionally or physically.
